Orthosiphon aristatus, commonly known as Cat’s Whiskers or Java Tea, is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family (Lamiaceae). Native to Southeast Asia and parts of Australia, this plant is easily identified by its distinctive flowers, which feature long, protruding stamens that resemble a cat’s whiskers. The plant typically grows as a subshrub, reaching up to a meter in height, with a bushy appearance. It has dark green leaves with serrated margins and square, purplish stems. The flowers are arranged in a spike-like inflorescence and can be white, pale lilac, or purplish, adding to its ornamental value.

Beyond its use as a beautiful garden plant, Orthosiphon aristatus has a long history in traditional medicine, particularly in Southeast Asia. It is widely cultivated for its leaves and stems, which are used to make herbal tea known as “Java tea” or “kidney tea.” The plant is highly regarded for its diuretic properties and is traditionally used to treat a variety of ailments, including kidney and bladder stones, urinary tract infections, gout, rheumatism, and hypertension.
